INDIA and Pakistan on Saturday agreed to a ceasefire after heavy military clashes in the past few days.

United States President Donald Trump revealed that the two countries agreed to a "full and immediate ceasefire" following US-led efforts to end their hostilities, reported Bernama.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he and Vice President JD Vance engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Army chief General Syed Asim Munir, and national security advisors Ajit Kumar Doval and Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik.

"I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site," Rubio said.

"We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace," he added.

Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirmed in posts on X that a ceasefire was reached.

"Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Dar said.

"India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action," Jaishankar said.

The development followed weeks of tension and confrontation that threatened to escalate into a full-scale war. – May 10, 2025
