A CATASTROPHIC fire engulfed a well-known nightclub in the Goan village of Arpora in the early hours of Sunday, killing at least 23 people and prompting a sweeping government inquiry into possible safety failures.
The inferno broke out at around 12.04 a.m. local time, rapidly spreading through the premises and trapping staff and patrons as thick smoke filled the building.
Reuters, on Sunday, cited the Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, confirming the death toll and described the tragedy as “a very heartbreaking day for all the people of Goa.”
Speaking at the scene, he said that most of those who perished were kitchen staff, although “three to four” foreign tourists were also among the dead.
The police chief later added that the fire had been fully contained and that all bodies had been recovered.
Preliminary reports cited by Press Trust of India suggest the blaze may have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion in the nightclub’s kitchen.
The rapid spread of smoke caused chaos as many victims succumbed to asphyxiation, while three others died from severe burn injuries.
Emergency services, including fire engines and ambulances, were dispatched immediately after authorities received reports of the blaze.
Injured survivors were taken to nearby hospitals as crews worked through the night to stabilise the situation.
Sawant said he had ordered a full inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire and to identify any breaches of safety procedures. “Those found responsible will face the strictest legal action; any negligence will be dealt with seriously,” he stated in a message on X.
Goa, a former Portuguese enclave on India’s western coast, remains one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations, known for its beaches and vibrant nightlife. In the first half of the year, around 5.5 million tourists travelled to the state, including 271,000 international visitors.
The disaster is expected to raise pressing questions about fire safety standards in entertainment venues across the region, particularly in areas heavily frequented by tourists. - December 7, 2025
