THE United States on Tuesday announced the approval of a US$2.3 billion sale of P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, torpedoes, and related equipment to Singapore, marking a significant reinforcement of the city-state’s maritime defence capabilities.
“The proposed sale will improve Singapore's capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible maritime force capable of deterring adversaries,” AFP cited the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) saying in a statement.
The DSCA added that the transaction “will enhance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Asia.”
Under the proposed arrangement, the State Department has approved the transfer of the military equipment to Singapore, while DSCA has provided the required notification to the US Congress. Final authorisation from Congress is still required before the sale can proceed.
The P-8A Poseidon aircraft, designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and intelligence-gathering missions, is regarded as a key asset in maintaining maritime security across strategic sea lanes in the region.
