PLANS for an US$800 billion economic support package for postwar Ukraine have been postponed following European opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s Greenland acquisition proposal and his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative, according to a report in the Financial Times.
The economic package, which was intended to be unveiled this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos with agreements between Ukraine, Europe, and the United States, has now been delayed, the report cited six unnamed officials as saying. Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.
One official told the Financial Times: “Nobody is in any mood to stage a grand spectacle around an agreement with Trump right now,” adding that disputes over Greenland and the Board of Peace had overtaken earlier discussions focused on Ukraine.
The report also indicated that tensions regarding Greenland disrupted negotiations on the text of the prosperity plan this week.
Notably, the United States did not send a representative to a key meeting on Monday evening, further delaying progress.
Despite the setback, the FT noted that the $800 billion plan was not being shelved indefinitely and could still be signed at a later date.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stressed on Tuesday that he would travel to Davos only if documents relating to U.S. security guarantees and the prosperity plan were ready to be signed during the forum.
The delay underscores the broader diplomatic friction surrounding Trump’s initiatives, which have shifted attention away from Ukraine’s postwar economic recovery efforts.
