A 31-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump following a shooting incident at a prominent Washington dinner attended by political and media elites, in a case that could see him sentenced to life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege that Cole Tomas Allen launched the attack during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, an annual black-tie gathering that brings together senior politicians, journalists and public figures.

"He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump," Reuters quoted prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine saying in court.

Allen, appearing in federal court in Washington two days after the incident wore a blue jail-issued uniform and was led into the courtroom in handcuffs. He did not respond to the allegations during the brief hearing, though his defence lawyer stated that he had no prior criminal record.

According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, investigators believe Allen may have been motivated by hostility towards the president, citing an email in which he allegedly referred to Trump as a “traitor”.

"Violence has no place in civil life," Blanche told reporters. "It cannot and will not be used to disrupt democratic institutions, and it certainly cannot continue to be used against the president of the United States."

Authorities said Allen travelled from California to Washington and had booked a room at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was held.

Court filings allege he was armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a semi-automatic handgun and multiple knives.

The affidavit further states that Allen described himself in an email to relatives as the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and outlined grievances about political leadership.

"On to why I did any of this: I am a citizen of the United States of America. What my representatives do reflects on me," Allen wrote in the email, according to investigators.

The shooting caused panic at the event, with attendees taking cover as security personnel moved swiftly to secure the scene. Trump, who had been scheduled to deliver remarks, was escorted away by security officers.

Law enforcement officials said Allen was subdued after entering a secured area while carrying a firearm. A Secret Service officer discharged a weapon during the confrontation, and another officer was struck in the chest while wearing a ballistic vest, though details of how the injury occurred remain unclear.

Allen also faces additional charges, including transporting firearms across state lines and discharging a weapon during a violent crime. A federal magistrate has ordered that he remain in custody pending further hearings, with prosecutors indicating that more charges may follow.

The incident marks the latest in a series of politically charged acts of violence in the United States and has heightened concerns about the safety of public officials, particularly amid an already tense political climate. - April 28, 2026
