EIGHT Buddhist monks were killed and 13 others injured after a pickup truck driven by a 10-year-old boy ploughed into a group of them on foot in Mukdahan province, northeastern Thailand, today.
Police said the accident happened at around noon in Ban Na Si Nuan, Mueang district, according to KhaosodEnglish.
Rescue teams, police and emergency workers who arrived at the scene found many victims lying on the road and in roadside areas.
"Five monks were confirmed dead at the scene, while three others died while receiving treatment at a hospital.
"A total of 13 monks with serious injuries were sent to several nearby hospitals for emergency treatment," a police spokesman said.
The Bangkok Post reported that the driver involved was an 11-year-old boy who was driving without his parents' permission.
He was driving the vehicle from the Don Tan district towards Mueang before losing control and crashing into a group of monks.
At the time of the incident, 34 monks were on a pilgrimage on foot from Ubon Ratchathani province to Don Tan district in Mukdahan. – July 2, 2026
