THE United States military said on Tuesday it successfully intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards American forces in the Middle East, describing the attack as an attempted surprise strike.
In a statement posted on X, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the missiles were fired by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) but did not disclose the specific location targeted.
“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted,” CENTCOM said.
Earlier, Axios, citing a US official, reported that the missiles had been launched towards a US military base in Jordan and were intercepted before reaching their target.
The incident comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran following President Donald Trump's decision over the weekend to halt a planned two-week US bombing campaign.
Trump has said there were “good talks” under way with Iran but warned that military strikes could resume if diplomatic efforts fail to produce an agreement.
Iran has denied seeking to restart negotiations with the United States.
The conflict began on Feb 28 when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military bases.
