UNITED STATES forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Aug 30 after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was observed preparing to launch rockets and sea mines into the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a US official said, in the first known American strikes on Iran since late July.
The strikes were followed by an Iranian attack on US forces stationed in Jordan, according to a Fox News reporter citing a US source.
“Nearly all incoming missiles ‘have been intercepted at this point’,” the reporter said in a post on X, adding that there had been no significant impact so far.
“I can confirm that earlier today US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” Reuters quoted the US official saying on Monday.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the American attack killed and wounded several soldiers and civilians, warning that the strikes would be met with a “response and punishment” from Tehran, according to Iranian state media.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the US attack was carried out using drones.
The latest escalation centres on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route that has been subject to a blockade during the conflict.
US President Donald Trump said last week that all mines had been detonated or removed from international waters in the strait and warned Iran that any ship or boat attempting to lay new mines would be destroyed.
The latest US strikes mark the first known American military action against Iran since late July, as the conflict has settled into a tense stalemate and Washington has threatened further sanctions against countries supporting Tehran.
The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Feb 28, prompting Iranian strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military bases.
The conflict has now passed the six-month mark, with US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon killing thousands and displacing millions.
Eighteen US service members have been killed in the conflict, according to the report.
The war has also disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply previously transited, putting global energy markets and international shipping under renewed pressure.
