WASHINGTON – Bahamas police are investigating the death of three Americans under mysterious circumstances at a popular resort chain.

“I have been regretfully informed today of the death of three American visitors, two men and a woman, at a resort property on Exuma,” Bahamas acting prime minister Chester Cooper said in a statement Friday.

The cause of death is still unknown, but “foul play is not suspected”, he said.

He said a fourth American woman had been airlifted to a hospital in Nassau, the capital of the archipelago, and expressed his condolences for the victims’ families.

The two men and one woman were found unresponsive Friday morning in their villas at the Sandals Emerald Bay Resort.

“A health emergency was initially reported and following our protocols we immediately alerted emergency medical professionals and relevant local authorities,” the resort said in a statement, declining to give further details to protect their guests’ privacy.

Officers were called Friday shortly after 9.00am and found one man in his bedroom, police said in a statement.

They were then told another two victims had been found in a separate villa. The second man was found in the bathroom and the woman in the bedroom, according to the statement.

None of the victims showed signs of trauma, police said, though the couple showed “signs of convulsion”.

Investigators said that the couple had complained of “illness” the night before and had visited a local medical facility for treatment.

Police said they are still waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death. – AFP, May 8, 2022
