ANTI-Corruption Commission (MACC) expects its investigation into Sapura Energy Berhad’s (SEB) overseas assets to be protracted, due to the complexity of international cooperation and data access, its chief said on Wednesday.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki estimated the value of SEB’s foreign assets at approximately USD3.3 million (RM13.98 million), involving subcontractors based in Brazil, the Netherlands, and Singapore.
“The investigation into SEB’s overseas assets is expected to take time, as gathering the required information is a lengthy process,” Azam said during a press conference at MACC headquarters.
“We also need to make several formal requests for assistance as part of the investigation,” he added.
The probe centres around alleged abuse of power involving RM12 million by certain individuals, believed to have taken place in 2018 when Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) injected capital into Sapura Energy, effectively turning it into a government-linked company (GLC).
To date, 15 witnesses have had their statements recorded, although no arrests have been made.
Azam also confirmed that MACC has frozen several assets linked to directors of Sapura Petroleum and their families. This includes two luxury homes valued at RM5.5 million, owned by the company’s Chief Executive Officer.
“In this first phase of the investigation, we are determining whether the RM12 million is connected to an offence under Section 23 of the MACC Act,” he said. - June 25, 2025
