SARAWAK is set to convene a high-level syndication session on 21 July aimed at accelerating its emergence as a regional semiconductor powerhouse.
The workshop, to be hosted by Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor, will bring together key federal and state ministries, government agencies, universities, training institutions, and industry leaders.
According to SMD, the one-day session seeks to “translate strategic vision into concrete actions and measurable outcomes”, with a strong emphasis on building long-term economic resilience and empowering future generations in Sarawak.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), the initiative follows the unveiling of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, officiated by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in April.
SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil will lead the session, delivering an in-depth presentation on the roadmap, which outlines ten strategic steps to develop a full-fledged semiconductor ecosystem by the end of the decade.
“This bottom-up approach has been our longstanding practice, ensuring our framework truly reflects industry needs – locally and globally – and unlocks opportunities for Sarawakians,” he said.
“This syndication will turn vision into reality, fuelling Sarawak’s journey toward becoming the Silicon Nerve Centre of Asia. It’s not just ambition. It’s happening – and we want everyone to be part of it.”
The workshop will also serve as a platform for participants to shape unified strategies that align Sarawak’s goals with national and international directions. Final recommendations from the session will be formally presented to Abang Johari. - July 19, 2025
