KUALA LUMPUR – TUV SUD, a leading certification, testing, auditing, inspection and training company, has been awarded the Overall Independent Safety Assessment contract for Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3) in Malaysia by main contractor MRCB George Kent Sdn Bhd.

LRT3 will connect two million people from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia via 37km of track serving 20 stations, with two interchange stations as well as five provisional stations by 2024.

The line will be designed and operated as a fully automatic driverless rapid transit system, according to a statement.

“Around the world, our rail experts mitigate risks resulting from increasingly complex railway systems and strive to verify that the relevant technical and operational risks have been reduced to an acceptable level,” said TUV SUD Malaysia general manager Chia Jen Wen.

Meanwhile, TUV SUD business unit manager for rail services Rene Bambor said the company was glad to support the lighthouse project with its extensive experience in similar projects by ensuring safety targets are met and the complete railway system and subsystems are compliant with safety requirements and global railway standards.

In this project, TUV SUD will assess LRT3 core subsystems such as light rail vehicle, signalling and train control system, trackworks and power rail, power supply and distribution system, telecommunication, depot equipment and maintenance vehicles, electronic access control system and automatic fare collection.

The scope also covers assessment of works implemented throughout the project phases: design, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning, trial running, and fault-free run. – Bernama, April 19, 2021
