KUALA LUMPUR – Top Glove Corporation Bhd has been cleared to resume exporting and selling gloves to the United States after the modification of the finding by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) effective today
In a statement, CBP said it has “determined, based upon additional information, that Top Glove merchandise is no longer being, or is likely to be, imported into the US in violation of Section 307 of the Tariff Act of 1930”.
On March 29, CBP with the approval of the secretary of Homeland Security, issued a finding that certain disposable gloves, were mined, produced, or manufactured in Malaysia by Top Glove with the use of convicts and forced or indentured labour, and were being or likely to be imported into the US.
CBP also told ports in the US to seize Top Glove’s goods after having barred imports last July, citing evidence of forced labour practices at the company’s production facilities across Malaysia.
Later, Top Glove said all 11 International Labour Organisation indicators of forced labour had been resolved.
“We have done our part. Now, we just wait for them to verify the payment and remediation to the workers,” said founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Lim Wee Chai at a virtual briefing on the company’s third quarter results in June. – The Vibes, September 10, 2021
