PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia will have new initiatives to empower the nation’s renewable energy (RE) industry, following the government’s decision today to lift the ban on RE exports, said Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

His ministry will collaborate with the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry under Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad on increasing generation capacity for RE.

This will create economic opportunities via enhanced growth of the nation’s RE industry while ensuring a secure electricity supply, Rafizi said at a press conference together with Nik Nazmi at Wisma Sumber Asli here, today.

“We must expedite the green industry so (its growth) can be accelerated faster than it is now.

“The ministries are cooperating to improve existing policy frameworks involving the green economy to encourage investments and participation from both the private and public sectors.

“Both ministries are examining existing processes to ensure that the policy does not slow down our aspirations for green energy,” he added.

The goal is to develop the RE industry to reach 70% capacity in the electricity supply system.

To boost RE usage, Putrajaya is allocating RM50 million to install solar power systems on government buildings nationwide, which will also allow them to save on electricity bills, he added.

The ban on RE exports was imposed by the Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration in October 2021.

Prior to that until the Sheraton Move in 2020, the Pakatan Harapan government had been looking at boosting RE trade to attract more investments and create jobs in the green energy sector.

In March, Nik Nazmi said the current government had plans to lift the ban on RE exports. – The Vibes, May 9, 2023
