THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) plans to collect up to RM263 million in assessment taxes this year based on the uptick trend it has recorded.

More ratepayers have become conscious of the need to settle their assessments after a campaign was launched to encourage early settlement.

George Town Lord Mayor and MBPP President Datuk Anthony Rajendran stated that up to RM117 million, or 45 per cent of the target, had been collected in the first quarter of this year.

If the trend follows, there is a good chance for MBPP to achieve its target, he said.

To entice ratepayers, Rajendran said that 57,934 residents in Penang were shortlisted to take part in a lucky draw for early settlement of their assessments.

"It is part of our appreciation to our ratepayers. This initiative is part of the MBPP's efforts to encourage the culture of settling one's dues."

Rajendran said this when launching the lucky draw campaign at City Hall.

Those shortlisted are ratepayers who had settled their dues before February 28, this year.

Ninety-five ratepayers were selected to receive gifts, with the overall sum allotted standing at RM35,500.

Among the prizes are a Yadea Velax e - scooter, a gold bar, an air wheel luggage, an electronic bicycle, laptops, cameras and other household electronic items. - May 22, 2026
