'TRESPASSING Humanity' is a film and fundraising event initiated and curated by UK-based Malaysian dancer, choreographer and rehearsal director Mavin Khoo, and one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists of today, Akram Khan. It is in collaboration with T.M. Krishna, Bhuvana Foundation & Sumanasa Foundation to support marginalised communities and performing artists in India severely impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic.
In an interview with Aalaap, an initiative in the performing arts in India that collaborates with artists, 'Trespassing Humanity' as a project found its genesis as Khoo and Khan grappled with the need, as artists, to “recognise the wider world of our community beyond the obvious industry circuit of performing artists.
"The creative spine of India offers the world unimaginable artistic wealth, and these stem from traditions that include hereditary temple musicians in villages, communities that work on hard labour erecting performance spaces for religious festivals, folklore artists and many more.”
The second wave of the pandemic hit India very hard. Artists who live below the poverty line, migrant labourers, transgender communities, and people discriminated against based on caste, religion and gender have been critically affected. They are struggling for their day-to-day survival.
Buvana Foundation and Sumanasa Foundation are continuing their efforts to support these marginalised communities.
“Artistes are investing time, creativity, energy to create powerful works of art; it is our duty to sit up and acknowledge that for the sake of a larger good, for the sake of humanity.”
Unfolding as a poetic offering of the works of a stellar line-up of artists – Anoushka Shankar, Mavin Khoo, Nitin Sawhney, Akram Khan and India’s legendary Carnatic vocalist, T.M. Krishna – all of whom respond and feel for the country that continues to inspire them creatively – in an exclusive film.
Donors who register will be given a link to an intimate concert made into a film by these artists who have come together in the need to do something for the creative soul and spirit of India that sits with those who are unheard, unseen and marginalised.
This film will be released tonight, July 17 at 7pm Malaysian time.
