Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a warm welcome from India’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad during his visit to Jamia Markaz, an Islamic institution in Kerala.

Anwar is in India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit before beginning a working visit to Kerala.

In a Facebook post, Sheikh Abubakr expressed his appreciation to Anwar for making time to visit Jamia Markaz despite his busy diplomatic schedule.

He said the meeting offered an opportunity to exchange views on issues affecting the Muslim community, particularly education, community development and religious affairs.

“His commitment to exchanging views on community development, education and religious affairs reflects a shared vision for intellectual and social progress,” Sheikh Abubakr said.

He also hoped the visit would lead to greater cooperation between Malaysia and India in higher education, social empowerment and cultural ties.

“May this historic visit and bilateral dialogue open new avenues in higher education, social empowerment and cultural relations between Malaysia and India, particularly in strengthening ties with Kerala,” he said.

Jamia Markaz described the engagement as an important opportunity to deepen ties between the two countries, particularly through education, social development and cultural exchange.

Sheikh Abubakr also conveyed his prayers for Anwar and the Malaysian delegation to have a safe journey and a meaningful stay in India. – September 13, 2026
