UP to a thousand new teachers are needed every year for primary and secondary schools throughout Sarawak.

State Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah said this makes Sarawak a ready location for those who want to teach.

"Every year, up to 1,000 new vacancies for teachers are seen in Sarawak.

"This is due to the increase in the number of classes, retirement of senior teachers and transfers to other states.

"We are trying hard to fill these posts through recruitment exercises," he said when attending an education event in Kuching.

The Sarawak Teachers Union had been urging the Education Ministry to allow the thousands of Sarawakian teachers currently serving in other states the option of transferring back to Sarawak.

Union president Kullin Djayang, in making the call, said schools in face a serious shortage of teachers in many primary and secondary schools despite the Education Ministry having approved the appointment of many newly graduated teachers to serve in this state.

"The ministry can resolve this by swiftly making a decision of allowing all Sarawakian teachers now serving in states outside of Sarawak to have the option of being transferred back to teach in Sarawak.

"The ministry had in fact already said in the recent past that Sarawakian teachers will be given priority to serve in Sarawak," he said. – February 12, 2024
