SCHOOLS and other educational institutions under the Education Ministry in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka are scheduled to operate as usual on Thursday (Oct 15), subject to prevailing air quality conditions and official directives.

The Negeri Sembilan Education Department said its decision was based on monitoring of current conditions and the latest air pollution index (API) readings.

However, schools must continue monitoring air quality, comply with existing guidelines and take appropriate measures to safeguard the health and safety of pupils and staff.

“Under Circular Letter No. 1 of 2019, all outdoor activities, including Physical Education, co-curricular activities, sports, camping, celebrations, assemblies and activities in open halls, must be suspended when the air pollution index exceeds 100,” the department said.

Pupils were also advised to wear face masks as a precaution, particularly those experiencing respiratory symptoms or belonging to high-risk groups.

In Melaka, the state Education Department said institutions would resume operations on Oct 15, subject to official confirmation from the authorities on the latest API developments.

It said the decision took into account prevailing air quality conditions, with priority given to the safety and well-being of pupils, teachers and education personnel.

However, all outdoor activities, including sports, Physical and Health Education, assemblies and co-curricular programmes, must be stopped immediately, the department said.

Pupils were encouraged to wear face masks and drink water frequently to reduce potential health risks associated with air pollution.

School administrators were instructed to take appropriate measures to ensure smooth operations and comply with the latest directives and guidelines issued by the ministry and relevant authorities.

Parents and guardians were also advised to monitor their children’s health and seek medical attention if they developed symptoms associated with air pollution.

The Melaka Education Department said any changes to school operating arrangements would be announced through its official Facebook page. - October 14, 2026
