PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to taxi drivers, describing them as among his most loyal supporters during the difficult times he faced in 1998.

He noted that they had offered their support when he was arrested, beaten, and imprisoned.

Therefore, their contributions and welfare should not be forgotten now that he holds the reins of government.

“When I was in dire straits—kicked, beaten, and thrown into the lock-up—these were the people who helped me! How could I possibly say no if these people (taxi drivers) were to ask for RM1,000 now that I am Prime Minister?” he said.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while speaking at the launch of a special financial aid scheme for taxi, rental car, and school bus drivers at the Ministry of Transport today.

Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramly.

Anwar acknowledged that taxi drivers face various challenges due to competition from e-hailing services, and the government is examining various measures to help alleviate their burden.

“In the past, there was less competition. Now, they face competition from new cars, Grab, and the like. Every time I meet them, these taxi drivers voice their grievances. How can we find ways to lighten their load?” he said.

He stated that while the government cannot resolve every problem faced by this group, efforts to assist them must continue.

“We cannot solve every problem—it is impossible. But we can help lighten the burden,” he said.

Anwar also mentioned several approaches being discussed, including collaboration with Proton, loan relief measures, and the use of revenue generated from vehicle registration number bids.

At the event, approximately 500 taxi, rental car, and school bus drivers received contribution vouchers worth RM1,000 each under the Special Financial Assistance Program, which was announced during the 2027 Budget presentation on October 9. – October 14, 2026
