KUALA LUMPUR – As the nation approaches its 66th year of independence, Malaysians are painting the town red, white, blue and yellow with colours of Jalur Gemilang, ahead of the official celebration tomorrow at Dataran Putrajaya.

Trader Muhammad Atiq Yusfadzir took the initiative to sell tanjak, a traditional Malay headdress, with motifs inspired by the national flag, as he feels that Malay culture is synonymous with Merdeka.

Priced from RM35 each, Atiq, with his uncle’s help, was able to produce around 300 to 500 tanjak for sale at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

Meanwhile, Khairulnizam Rahim took the opportunity to sell various Jalur Gemilang-themed accessories at Taman Melati LRT Station.

His items range from baju kebaya and baju kurung of various sizes, to T-shirts, pins, daggers, “warrior” clothing, and accessories.

Khairulnizam said the products are marketed at very reasonable prices, starting from as low as RM25, while the Merdeka shirt collection starts from RM49.

Tomorrow, the National Day celebration at Dataran Putrajaya will start at 8am, with an estimated 17,000 participants and 66 contingents.

The public is advised to use public transport to get to Putrajaya. The MRT service will work in tandem with the intermediary bus service provided free of charge by the Putrajaya Corporation from 4am.
