SARAWAK will have a dedicated second heart treatment centre within a public hospital following the move by the federal Ministry of Health to set up a specialised Cardiology Unit in the Bintulu Hospital, in northern Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian announced this today during his visit to Bintulu Hospital located about 250kms south of Miri.

"The setting up of the Cardiology Unit in Bintulu Hospital to provide heart treatment facilities for the public is another very important milestone in public health and medical services in Sarawak.

"We have the first public heart treatment facility in the Sarawak Heart Centre near Kuching. Now we have this second heart treatment facility in Bintulu that will cater to the needs of patients from the central and northern regions of Sarawak.

"Previously, all heart patients throughout Sarawak had to go to Kuching as they had no choice.

"Now that heart treatment will be made available in Bintulu, patients and their families from central and northern Sarawak can save a lot of money and time as they need not make the long trip to Kuching anymore," he said.

Dr Sim said the Bintulu Hospital Cardiology Unit will have a full range of treatment services and wards.

The number of heart patients have increased by the year, he said, adding that heart treatment facilities have become a necessity for the general public.

Central and northern Sarawak have a combined population of about 1.2 million out of the total three million population in the state. – February 26, 2025
