WHY is this Mercedes-Benz called a Maybach and why is it better than the Mercedes S-Class?

To start, the name Maybach comes from a man, Wilhelm Maybach who was the technical director of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) until he left in 1907.

The level of quality and refinement in a Mercedes-Maybach supersedes the humble S-Class to allow it to compete directly with a Bentley or Rolls Royce.

Maybach explained

The very first Maybach luxury sedan arrived in 1997 and in two variants, the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62, reflecting the lengths of the automobiles in decimeters.

In 2005, the 57S was added which was powered by a 6.0L V12 bi-turbo engine producing 603hp and 1,000Nm of torque with luxury appointments that increased its asking price by 20-25%.

Maybach sales

This car is not a common sight on our Malaysian roads and there is a reason for it.

Sadly, by 2007 Mercedes-Benz realized that with just 157 units sold worldwide they could not compete with Rolls Royce who sold 2,711 units in the same year.

By 2011 only 44 more Maybach’s were sold and so Mercedes-Benz retired the Maybach.

In 2015, Mercedes-Benz decided to revive the Maybach and here comes the second generation model and its now called Mercedes-Maybach

Since the market launch in 2015, more than 60,000 units have been delivered worldwide.

In recent years, around 600 units per month went to China alone and in 2019 its average sales even exceeded 700 units per month.

In 2018 a revised version of the Maybach S560 arrived in Malaysia and was priced at RM1,408,888 which was about half of the price of the lowest priced Rolls Royce, the Ghost at RM3,030,000.

Maybach in 2021

The new 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines the perfection and high-tech solutions of the only recently presented Mercedes-Benz flagship model with the exclusivity and tradition of Maybach.

The 18 cm longer wheelbase compared to the long variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class entirely benefits the rear.

Thanks to Executive seats as standard and the Chauffeur package, the rear section becomes a comfortable working or resting area.

They are complemented by exclusive details such as large areas of trim on the rear of the front seats and between the two rear passengers. In a number of markets, sales of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will commence before the end of 2021.

Maybach comfort

The interior of the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is based on the completely new interior design of the Mercedes-Benz S‑Class. The sculptured look of the dashboard, centre console and armrests appears to float above an expansive interior landscape.

Up to five display screens are available. Included as standard is a 12.8-inch OLED central display as a high-tech control centre.

A 12.3-inch 3D driver display with three-dimensional representation of other road users and pronounced depth and shade effects is available on request. The surrounds of the dial instruments are in the brand colour rose gold.

The NVH (noise, vibrations, harshness) performance of this Maybach has reached the levels of its immediate rival.

The extended NVH measures mainly benefit the rear section. Additional absorbent foam is installed in the area of the rear wheel arches, for example. The additional, fixed quarter-lights in the C-pillars have thicker laminated glass, as they are in close proximity to the heads of rear passengers.

Noise-optimized tyres with foam absorbers are available on request. Active road noise compensation is used by the company for the first time.

The system reduces unwanted low-frequency noises using counter-phased sound waves. The bass speakers of the Burmester high-end 4D surround sound system are used for sound reproduction.

Finally, the AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable damping ADS+ is standard equipment. Using DYNAMIC SELECT, the driver is able to individually modify the characteristics of the powertrain, ESP, the suspension and the steering.

The selection is made using a control at the lower end of the central display. DYNAMIC SELECT has a dedicated MAYBACH driving mode which focuses entirely on ride comfort which also provides ride comfort like its immediate rival.

How much?

Well, we guess the selling price in 2021 will not go past RM1,500,000 before some options can be added on and this will be with Malaysian taxes included.

The Rolls Royce Ghost might be double the price, but arriving in a Roller makes a bigger statement in Malaysia over any grand Mercedes-Maybach and this is how the wealthy Malaysians roll. - The Vibes, January 1, 2021
