A globally-branded fast-food outlet was ordered shut for 14 days in Penang after its kitchen was found to be dirty last week.

Penang is believed to be the first state in the country to order a McDonald's outlet - at the Lotus hypermarket complex in Tanjong Pinang to temporarily close due to hygiene concerns.

State executive councillor in charge of health, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, said this is a clear message that the state will not compromise on cleanliness, regardless of which outlet it concerns.

Penang has been on the uptick in ensuring cleanliness, especially since the state is regarded as the street gastronomic capital of the country.

Food here is also seen as part of the tourism allure of the state.

Gooi also reiterated that enforcement is carried out fairly at all levels, regardless of who the owners may be.

He said this after accusations were made online that Penang was intentionally going after Chinese eateries, after a string of outlets along Jalan Sri Bahari were closed earlier, because they were deemed to be unhygienic. - May 12, 2026.
