MALAYSIA finds itself highly lauded in the latest edition of Lonely Planet’s annual ‘Best in Travel’ list, with the capital Kuala Lumpur named as one of the top food destinations in the world.
Other places to earn this distinction from the world renowned guidebook company are Umbria in Italy, Fukuoka in Japan, Lima in Peru, among others.
The Best in Travel website says: “Don’t sleep on the food scene in Kuala Lumpur. This Asian metropolis is one for the senses including your palate. Food stall-lined streets, markets with delicious snacks, and lively nightlife scene put this Malaysian capital city on our list for places to eat.”
“A skyline punctuated by minarets, Mogul-style domes and skyscrapers; colourful, food-stall-lined streets shaded by a leafy canopy of banyan trees – this is Kuala Lumpur.”
The website further cites Malaysia’s multiculturalism, depth of history, quality shopping options and the variety of street food every local swears by.
“... you'll be sure to come across some of the city's best dining spots: the hawker stalls and traditional neighbourhood kopitiam (coffee shops) that beckon you over with the aroma of freshly cooked food and the promise of refreshment with tropical juices and cooling drinks.”
This year’s edition of the ‘Best in Travel’ list is a departure from previous editions, in that instead of offering a simple list, the destinations from around the world are split up into five categories -- eat, learn, journey, unwind and connect.
"This year, we really wanted to try something new and we wanted to reflect the way that we saw travelers looking for travel, which was about the destination, but also about the experience," explains Nitya Chambers, executive editor and senior vice president of content at Lonely Planet.
The locations in the list came about through an exhaustive process that included reaching out to more than 200 travel experts around the world, discussions and shortlisting, before a panel of judges narrowed the list even further. – The Vibes, November 16, 2022
