WHETHER they're recent hits or nearly 30 years old, certain TV series have such an influence on our daily lives that they become sources of inspiration for decorating our homes.

According to a study, ‘Friends’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Wednesday’ have all influenced home interiors.

Whether in fashion, in music or even on our screens, TV shows can occupy a large place in our day-to-day lives, so much so that they are even influencing interior design choices in our houses and apartments.

According to a report by Taskrabbit on pop culture trends in 2023, conducted among 6,000 people in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, a quarter of respondents (26%) say they have been directly inspired to change the interior of their home after watching a movie or television show.

More than a third (37%) are inspired by what they see in the media when it comes to making design changes in their home.

And in the field of decoration, nostalgia is all the rage. If the 1990s still hold sway with the young generation in the world of fashion, many are also inspired by retro TV series to decorate their homes.

Two series seem to stand out in the study, starting with ‘Friends’. In fact, 34% of the people surveyed said that the comedy starring Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer influenced their design choices.

And it is especially the famous purple apartment door that seduces fans the most. On TikTok, the #FriendsDoor hashtag, which has more than three million views, features DIY videos showing how to paint and decorate your door like the one in the iconic series.

Next up, ‘Sex and the City’, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, informs interior design choices for 31% of those polled, according to the survey.

Bright colours on walls are appealing to viewers, with green paint notably on the up in the UK (+12%), the study reports. But this very '90s trend is contending with a more recent trend for black paint.

In the US, requests for black paint jobs have increased by 92% in one year, according to Taskrabbit.

The "dark academia" trend has become particularly popular thanks to the hit Netflix show, ‘Wednesday’, featuring the star of the moment, Jenna Ortega.

Indeed, it's not just vintage series that are inspiring budding interior designers. The opulence of shows like ‘Succession’ and ‘Bridgerton’ has also given people a taste for luxury.

The study observed a 19% increase in home improvement requests for marble in the United States. In the United Kingdom, requests to add gold accents increased by 89%, while in France, silver is a popular choice, with a 200% increase in requests.

The study reports that 53% of people surveyed worldwide have decided to change their interior design in 2023. If 24% of the people surveyed worldwide spend more than 15 hours per week watching television and movies, it is the British who seem to be the biggest telly addicts, with screen time topping 15 hours for 32% of respondents. – ETX Daily Up, May 18, 2023
