PAS today offered a solution to the alleged over four million single women in the country – polygamy.

Its deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (Kubang Kerian-PN) said the high number of unmarried women in the country was “cause for concern” and that polygamy was a “way out”.

He suggested the government provide moral support for men capable of and qualified to marry more than one woman.

“We are not committing a crime and I don’t understand why polygamy is such a sensitive issue. For those eligible, there should be fair, moral support,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.

Based on the 2010 Malaysia population census report, Tuan Ibrahim said, 5.56 million Malaysians above the age of 30 had either married late, postponed their marriage or were unmarried.

“I know my suggestion is not a final solution, but it can at least address some of the ‘problems’,” he said.

At that point, Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) asked Tuan Ibrahim if he had one or two (wives).

“I only have one, and three more empty spots,” he said, drawing laughter from the house.

However, Tuan Ibrahim’s suggestion did not go down well with female MPs.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh asked Tuan Ibrahim why being single was a problem.

Taking to social media, she said tying the knot late was not a problem that needs solving.

Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin meanwhile demanded action against Tuan Ibrahim as his suggestion was sexist and insulting to women. – The Vibes, November 22, 2023.
