“WE would rather remain single and have a good life than get involved with an irresponsible, useless man.”

This was the response from several women who spoke to The Vibes following the statement from PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man that the high number of unmarried women in the country was “cause for concern” and that polygamy was a “way out”.

The PAS lawmaker made this statement in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, drawing criticism from female MPs, including Hannah Yeoh and Yeo Bee Yin.

“There is nothing wrong with being single. Women these days rather pursue their careers and live a happy, carefree life, indulging in the finer things like dining and travelling.

“We certainly do not feel lonely and there is no reason for us to be the second or third wife to anybody,” said Noraini, 36, who is a lecturer at a private college in Kuala Lumpur.

She said she was offended by Tuan Ibrahim’s statement and described him as “someone who lives in a cave”.

“My cats are better companions,” said Sharimah, a 40-year-old financial consultant.

She said she had three cats at home and was very happy leading a single life.

“I know of many who are married and leading miserable lives, while there are also those who are happy.

“It is all about finding the right person in life and not tying the knot because your family or society says so.

“I know a friend who is sinking into depression after marrying a man who can’t even look after himself and is now living off her,” said Sharimah.

Adeline, 42, said she agreed with Yeo (Bee Yin) who had earlier said that action should be taken against Tuan Ibrahim for making a sexist remark which was insulting to women.

“Even in many advanced nations, including our neighbouring Singapore, a large number of women prefer to focus on their careers rather than get hitched.

“The world is changing, but I guess PAS remains stuck in the past,” said the music teacher.

A 34-year-old nurse also criticised Tuan Ibrahim over his suggestion labelling it as the “dumbest thing she ever heard”.

“What nonsense is he talking about? Who wants to be the second, third or fourth choice? We rather remain single and live a good life,” said Salina who is attached to a private hospital in Petaling Jaya.

She said she has been own place, several cats, a good car and is living a happy, peaceful life.

“Why look for unnecessary trouble when you can life a good life on your own?” she asked. – The Vibes, November 23, 2023
