THE flood situation in northern Sarawak has worsened following a downpour last night and in the early hours this morning.

About a dozen locations in the districts of Subis, Ulu Teru and Marudi are inundated, with the worst-hit having 1m of water.

Latest reports by the Miri Civil Defence Department said the areas included 12 longhouses, SK Pengarah Entri (in Ulu Teru) and the Klinik Ulu Teru.

Longhouse Rumah Kalong and riverine villages of Sungai Punyu (in Ulu Teru) are among those populated settlements under 1m of water.

Among the other badly flooded longhouses are Rumah Justin, Kampung Matek, Rumah Rendah, Rumah Takang, Rumah Asok and Kampung Mempelam (about 1m).

Numerous roads in these locations are also flooded, said the department.

The department has deployed personnel to check on the safety of the residents.
