THE Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) will push for a display of unity during the annual Thaipusam festival next month though there may be a difference of opinions among certain quarters, said its chairman.
RSN Rayer, who is also the Jelutong MP told a press conference that the unity celebrations will be marked by the continuation of the dual chariots - the traditional Silver Chariot, under the Natukottai Chettiars group and the Golden Chariot, which was introduced by the PHEB in 2017.
He assured all devotees that both chariots would be allowed and could leave at the same time from their respective temples here.
To reflect unity, Rayer held a media briefing with the trustees of the Chettiar group, saying that Hinduism allows and preaches about advocating unity.
"What is wrong about showcasing unity? The country is governed by a united understanding of political blocs so our festival can likewise exhibit our strength in unity."
He said that there was mischievous reporting by certain quarters, which resulted in confusion among the community, adding that he wished to dispel the misconceptions.
Earlier, PHEB announced that the procession of both chariots will continue and that the board plans to mend the rift with the Chettiars Group here after an earlier rift had erupted over Thaipusam when the board decided to moot for the Golden Chariot.
Among those present were PHEB deputy chairman Senator Dr R.A. Lingeshwaran and commissioners, Dr Vishantini Kanasan (secretary), Kumaresan Aramugam, Kumaran Krishnan, Datuk Dhinagaran Jayabalan and Chandra Mohan Krishnan
"We have held several discussions and are working towards coordinating the chariots for the procession. We share a cordial relationship with the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple trustees and are looking forward to holding a world-class Thaipusam for all," said Rayer.
"Thaipusam is for the service of the people, and we want everyone to take part. We want to show how the Hindu community can unite and celebrate Thaipusam together."
The Chettiar Temple managing trustee A.L. Lakshmanan, said they have attended three meetings to prepare for the celebration.
