THE MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained remand orders on four businessmen, including a former political secretary to a past minister and an individual with the title of ‘Datuk Seri’.
Quoting sources, Sinar Harian reported that all those arrested are suspected of receiving bribes from several companies and contractors that had won tenders in a ministry.
According to the Malay-language portal, magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin allowed three suspects to be remanded for four days from today until this Saturday, while another was remanded for three days until Friday.
The remand applications were made by MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court this morning.
"The four were arrested after the main suspect, who previously worked as a political secretary to a former minister, was believed to have asked for and accepted a bribe to ensure that a supply tender to a ministry would be successfully obtained by the contractor.
"The four male suspects are believed to have received bribes from several companies, including a contractor who won a work tender at a ministry from around 2020 to 2021 worth millions of ringgit,” the source was quoted as saying.
"All the suspects were arrested at about 7pm to 8.30pm yesterday. Three of them were arrested at the MACC headquarters when they appeared there to have their statements recorded. The other was arrested around Shah Alam,” the report said.
Sinar Harian also quoted MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman as confirming the arrests of all the suspects.
The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 for the offence of accepting gratification. – The Vibes, January 24, 2024
