The report in The Vibes which appeared on Feb 22 - March 12, 2024

A 'BEGGAR' at the Sri Jaya night market in Maran, Pahang who owns a Proton X70 Premium will no longer be getting an allowance from the Welfare Department.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the man was also asked to formally pledge that he would not beg anymore.

"We have stopped his RM450 monthly from JKM for his supposed disability since 2001.

"He is employed as a shift supervisor at a bus company and makes up to RM2,000 monthly," she told the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Vibes had reported on Feb 22 that the 'beggar' was spotted when officers from the department's Maran office were conducting checks to eradicate begging activities in the area when they saw him wearing a jubah and kopiah.

The man was spotted in between the stall umbrellas at the market, holding a paper bag and seeking help from passers-by.

He later admitted that the Proton X70 was his and that he made up to RM500 begging at the night market for about four to five hours daily.

Noraini also said the ministry was reviewing the Destitute Persons Act 1977 to improve the handling of poverty and homelessness-related issues and the study is expected to be completed by mid-year. - The Vibes, March 12, 2024
