DATUK Mutang Tagal had wanted to change the image of the Senate that had been often labelled as a “rubber stamp” to the Dewan Rakyat.

Sarawak PKR deputy chairman Senator Abun Sui Anyit said Mutang had told his close associates that he wanted to see the Dewan Negara engage in meaningful and comprehensive study of all bills that were to become law.

“Mutang was a man of integrity.

“When he took up the Senate post offered to him, he said he accepted as this is a chance to make the Senate a place for comprehensive study and debate of bills that are to become law.

“He said the Senate is not a rubber stamp.

“Sadly, he did not have time to realise his aim,” said Sui, who is Sarawak Pakatan Harapan information chief.

Mutang, who was a local ethnic Lun Bawang from the Bakelalan highlands in northern Sarawak, died last week of heart failure.

His body was brought back to Miri city today for a wake at the Borneo Evangelical Movement church building near Miri Airport.

He will be buried at the Lambir Cemetery tomorrow.

Sui said Mutang had accomplished a lot for the ethnic people of Sarawak in the social and business fronts.

He initiated many efforts to improve their standing in society. – May 12, 2024.
