PARTI Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) has proposed that its party president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum be appointed to fill the vacant Senate president’s post.

PRS, which is a component of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak state government, said Salang is "very qualified" to fill the post left vacant following the death of Datuk Mutang Tagal from heart failure recently.

PRS deputy information chief Andy Lawrence said Salang has wide experience serving not just PRS, and held numerous federal deputy minister posts before.

"He is also actively involved in many arenas at state and national level representing the party and the native communities.

"His vast experience in the public circles will make him an effective Senate president," he said in a press statement.

PRS praised the late Mutang for being an outstanding leader for the natives of Sarawak.

PRS is predominantly Dayak in its membership and leadership, while Salang is also a Dayak and hails from central Sarawak.

The other component parties of GPS are Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu, Sarawak United Peoples Party and Progressive Democratic Party.

Mutang, who was a local ethnic Lun Bawang from the Bakelalan highlands in northern Sarawak, died last week of heart failure. - The Vibes, May 15, 2024.
