SINGAPORE has tightened its security measures, including at border checkpoints, to prevent potential terrorist attacks, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said.
In his first public remarks since taking office, Wong said the decision was made to safeguard Singapore’s security after an attack on a police station in neighbouring Malaysia by a man with suspected ties to an Al-Qaeda-linked group, the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)
In this incident, two policemen were killed and another injured after the suspect stormed into the police station.
"In response to the heightened threat following the Ulu Tiram attack, we have increased security measures, including at our checkpoints.
"Our security agencies will continue closely monitoring global and regional security developments.
"Such an attack, just across our borders, is a grim reminder that the threat of terrorism remains high," he said in a statement today.
He called on Singaporeans to remain vigilant against any terrorism threats.
Last Saturday, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the suspect appeared to have acted alone despite his father’s links to JI.
“Based on early investigation, we found that the perpetrator acted alone. This is a lone-wolf attack,” the Home Minister told a press conference at the Johor police headquarters.
Jemaah Islamiyah was an Indonesia-based militant group dedicated to the establishment of an Islamic state in Southeast Asia.
It was founded by Muslim preacher Abu Bakar Bashir in the early 1990s.
The group was linked to al-Qaeda and was responsible for the 2002 Bali bombing. – May 21, 2024.
