EMERGENCY evacuations were carried out in the remote districts of Betong and Skrang after they were hit by floods, in the early hours of today, in Sarawak.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department rescued residents of Rumah Lawing in Betong and Rumah Entalun in Skrang when the floodwaters began to rise.

The department said heavy rain started late yesterday and continued into the early morning.

The Bomba Betong and Bomba Skrang rescue squads entered the flooded zones on boats and rescued the trapped families.

"All the families have been evacuated and are taking shelter in in community halls," the department said in a state, ent.

This is the second time in two days that flash floods have hit rural Sarawak, triggering emergency evacuations.

On May 24, similar weather in northernmost Sarawak saw the emergency evacuation of a school in the Lawas district after a flash flood. – May 26, 2024
