MALAYSIA has been recognised as one of the countries with the best value Michelin-star restaurants, scoring 7.5 out of 10, the cheapest compared to all the countries ranked.
A survey by Spin Genie showed Kuala Lumpur is home to the most Michelin establishments in Malaysia, followed by Penang.
In 2023, the Michelin guide featured 61 restaurants, 27 of them in Kuala Lumpur and 34 in Penang.
Notable restaurants in Kuala Lumpur include Bōl, Café Café, Entier, Frangipani, Jwala, Ling Long, Malai, Marini's on 57, Nadodi (relocated), Seed, Shanghai Restaurant, Sushi Masa, Tanglin (Bukit Damansara), Tenmasa, Teochew Lao Er, and Wagyu Kappo Yoshida.
In Penang, highlights include 888 Hokkien Mee (Lebuh Presgrave), Air Itam Duck Rice, Ceki, Fook Cheow Cafe, Jit Seng Hong Kong Roasted Duck Rice, Penang Famous Samosa, Richard Rivalee, Sambal, and The Pinn.
The survey highlighted Malaysia's vibrant culinary culture, offering a range of dishes from traditional to contemporary European cuisines.

Singapore ranked second with a score of 7.87 out of 10. It is also known for its affordability in Michelin-starred dining, boasting a significant number of top-rated restaurants.
“Singapore offers a variety of dining options across different price ranges, making it accessible for those interested in fine dining without breaking the bank.”
Hong Kong came in third with the same score of 7.87 out of 10. While no longer the cheapest option, it remains a paradise for food lovers with 88 Michelin-starred establishments.
“Hong Kong continues to expand its high-end dining scene, welcoming 19 new Michelin-starred restaurants in the past year, indicating a growing appetite for luxury dining experiences.”
Finland emerged as the most expensive country for Michelin-starred dining, mainly centred in its capital city, Helsinki.
France leads with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants, boasting 660 establishments, predominantly in the luxury category.
Macau tops the list for the most Michelin-starred restaurants per 100,000 people, averaging 2.6 restaurants.
El Celler de Can Roca, run by three brothers, remains a standout with a score of 9.05 out of 10, celebrated for its innovative approach to Catalan cuisine.
Renowned chef Alain Ducasse holds the record for the most Michelin stars, accumulating a total of 21 stars during his career. – June 14, 2024.
