A FIREFLY flight to Penang was forced to return to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang due to overheating of air conditioning which caused smoke to fill the cabin, reported the New Straits Times.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed the aircraft with registration 9M-FYG experienced defects that required it to turn back.

CAAM chief executive officer, Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud, when contacted by NST, said preliminary reports revealed that the flight experienced an extraction fan failure upon take off.

"According to the pilot report, the fan failure caused the air-conditioning system in the flight to get overheated, which then caused smoke in the cabin area."

He said there may have been several other defects on the flight which are currently being investigated.
