THE planned eviction of Kampung Sembulan Tengah residents has been postponed as authorities work to address issues related to the area's redevelopment, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III, Datuk Shahelmy Yahya.
Shahelmy said the decision followed two discussions between Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and the affected villagers.
Residents whose land leases had expired were initially required to vacate their homes in October and November.
"We have agreed to postpone the notices originally scheduled for October 14 and November 1. No immediate evictions or relocations will take place until all matters are resolved.
“For now, our priority is addressing safety concerns," he said during a visit to the village in Kota Kinabalu today.
The postponement came after consultations aimed at preventing sudden disruptions and ensuring that residents have suitable housing arrangements.
“We are committed to ensuring no one is displaced without proper relocation arrangements," Shahelmy said, acknowledging the concerns of residents about losing their homes.
"The government is dedicated to finding a solution that benefits all parties involved."
Shahelmy added that the villagers have agreed that any structures on expired leases if deemed unsafe, will be demolished if necessary.
"However, no action will be taken without informing the affected residents," he said.
Shahelmy also confirmed that discussions on the redevelopment project are ongoing, with the appointment of a developer yet to be finalised. He assured residents that the government would prioritise fair relocation and compensation.
"We are in talks with all stakeholders to ensure the redevelopment is carried out responsibly, with the well-being of the residents as our top priority," he added.
The original Kampung Sembulan Tengah residents held 60-year town leases, most of which have now expired. Some residents were granted temporary occupation leases (TOL), which are also nearing expiry.
According to DBKK records, 104 lots have expired, while 67 remain active. - Oct 20, 2024
