SABAH Umno has raised concerns over plans by two opposing groups to hold sit-ins at the same time and location on December 31, warning of possible tensions if the authorities do not step in.
State Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said the assemblies, set to take place in front of the Sabah State Administrative Centre (PPNS), could provoke clashes and disrupt public safety.
“This situation could lead to extreme provocations and disrupt public order,” he said, referring to a student-led protest against corruption in Sabah and the other gathering, believed to be from a group supportive of Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, titled "Himpunan Bangkit Sabahan: Kami Bersama Hajiji" that is being widely promoted on social media.
Both protests are to be held at the same time and location on New Year's Eve.
The student protest was announced three days ago, while a poster for the second event started circulating on social media platforms yesterday.
The secretariat of the student protest has indicated that it has notified the police over their sit-in protest but the same could not be said over the other.
It also could not be ascertained who is behind the Kami Bersama Hajiji protest following a quick check on public platforms.
Bung called on the police to take proactive measures, including relocating one of the groups to a different venue to avoid confrontation.
“Allowing both groups to gather at the same location and time is not ideal. Separating them can help reduce the risk of confrontation,” he added.
He also urged dialogue between organizers and authorities to ensure the gatherings comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
“Everyone must act responsibly and prioritise harmony. The safety and stability of Sabah must not be compromised,” Bung said.
Sabah Umno said it supports peaceful assemblies but stressed the need to adhere to the law and consider public interest. - December 24, 2024
