OVERCOMING traffic congestion in the island remains a priority for the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) this year, said its mayor.

Among efforts taken to overcome this, said Datuk A. Rajendran was the 50 per cent increase in parking charges.

"Despite some opposition, most Penangites supported the initiative to increase parking charges," he said.

Under the new rates, a motorist will be charged 60 cents for 30 minutes and RM1.20 per hour.

MBPP is also looking at the possibility of introducing a two-hour parking rate for areas with high demand.

"The main aim of this increase is to discourage people from parking for long hours and deprive others of lots," he said.

He said they have also identified five critical roads where stricter action will be taken against vehicles found obstructing traffic.

Among these roads are Jalan Jelutong and Jalan Burma.

"We have tried advising people against indiscriminate parking, but now it is time to take action," he said.

Rajendran said the council has also purchased additional tow trucks to beef up enforcement.

He also stressed that Penang's economy thrives on tourism and urged industry players to continue promotional efforts in 2025.

“MBPP pledges steadfast support for these efforts and emphasises its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to enhance Penang’s appeal,” he said.

He also said it was important to ensure that cleanliness is maintained and this is also an important aspect of tourism. - January 14, 2025
