A FIRE destroyed a longhouse in the Kanowit district in central Sarawak around 1 pm today in another devastating fire at Sarawak longhouses.

The fire at the longhouse called Rumah Paulus Yan razed the entire structure.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the Kanowit fire teams were at the site fighting the flames.

"We received an emergency alert and rushed to the site. However the fire destroyed the longhouse totally," said the department.

There are 16 living quarters built adjoining each other and the number of residents left homeless is still being ascertained.

In November, some 300 Penans were left homeless in remote Baram in northern Sarawak also due to a fire. - January 15, 2025
