THE Sarawak Marine Police have seized RM 21.5 million worth of firecrackers and fireworks during a raid at the Lawas district jetty in northernmost Sarawak adjacent to the border with Sabah.

Sarawak police Chief Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the intelligence unit of the marine police uncovered a cargo ship docked at the Lawas jetty last week during special ops.

The special ops was carried out based on information received, he said in a press statement.

"During the raid, it was found that the ship was operated by an Indonesian.

"There were 100 boxes of firecrackers on board the ship.

"The ship operator did not have permission to carry the cargo so we suspect it was smuggled into Sarawak from a nearby country.

"The value is about RM 21.526 million," he said.

Mancha said the case is being probed under the Explosives Act 1957 which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine of RM 10,000 upon conviction. - January 18, 2025
