PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has confirmed his intention to run for a central leadership position in the upcoming party election, which is scheduled for May 24.
However, the Selangor Menteri Besar has yet to decide on which specific role to contest, noting the importance of maintaining stability within PKR as a critical component of Malaysia's Unity Government.
Amirudin said that his primary concern is not securing a position within the party but rather strengthening PKR's role in government.
He acknowledged discussions with various factions within the party, with some encouraging him to remain in his current role, while others suggested he consider standing for a different position.
Amirudin explained that his decision will be guided by the potential to unite the party and avoid divisions, as any internal conflicts could have broader implications on the stability of the Unity Government.
He also touched on the party’s top leadership posts, including the president and deputy president, which are not expected to be contested in the upcoming election.
Amirudin reaffirmed that PKR’s democratic process allows for any member to contest, but he cautioned that if a leadership contest leads to instability, it should be carefully reconsidered to prevent any negative impact on the party or government.
PKR's Secretary-General Fuziah Salleh had earlier announced that the election for the party’s Central Leadership Council (MPP), Women’s Leadership Council (MPWP), and Youth Leadership Council (MPAMKP) will take place on May 24.
Meanwhile, elections for positions at the branch level are scheduled from April 11 to 20.
