Bersatu's future in PN at stake as disciplinary proceedings begin
PN can issue a warning, suspend Bersatu or expel the party from the coalition - October 27, 2026

BERSATU'S position in Perikatan Nasional (PN) is under scrutiny after the opposition coalition initiated disciplinary proceedings that could reshape its political cooperation with PAS ahead of future elections.

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said charges would be prepared under Clause 15 of the coalition's constitution, with Bersatu to be given a reasonable period to respond before a decision is made.

The move followed an emergency meeting of PN's Supreme Council at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Among the allegations against Bersatu are contesting against PAS candidates in four seats during the Negeri Sembilan state election, using its own logo in other constituencies and lodging a complaint with the Registrar of Societies after being excluded from a meeting on July 16.

PN can issue a warning, suspend Bersatu or expel the party from the coalition. No final decision has been made, as the disciplinary process must first be completed.

Four Bersatu representatives — party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi and Muhammad Hilman Idham — were invited to the emergency meeting but did not attend.

Muhyiddin reportedly notified the coalition of his absence via WhatsApp, while the other three representatives did not respond.

The proceedings could have far-reaching implications for opposition cooperation, particularly over electoral seat allocations, candidate selection, party logo usage and coordination of campaign machinery.

A warning could leave room for reconciliation, but suspension or expulsion would force Bersatu to reassess its electoral strategy and political partnerships. It could also complicate PN's preparations for future elections if the two parties fail to resolve their differences.

Any expulsion from PN, however, would not in itself affect Bersatu's status as a registered political party.

The outcome will depend on the formal charges, Bersatu's response and the PN Supreme Council's final decision, leaving the coalition's future relationship with Bersatu uncertain. - October 27, 2026
