THE Dewan Rakyat's sitting today will center on a variety of critical urban issues, including the potential introduction of congestion charges in Kuala Lumpur and the ongoing efforts to raise the profile of street performers as an integral part of the city's cultural identity.
According to the official Order Paper published on the Parliament's website, a key question will be directed to the Prime Minister during the Minister’s Question Time, focusing on the potential mechanisms for implementing congestion charges in the capital, Bernama reported.
Lawmakers will seek to understand how such charges might work and the anticipated impact they will have in alleviating traffic congestion in the city.
In addition to traffic-related concerns, P. Prabakaran, the Member of Parliament for Batu (PH-Batu), is set to raise a question about the initiatives of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) aimed at enhancing the recognition of street performers.
Bernama cited, his inquiry will seek clarification on how the city is working to elevate the status of these performers, positioning them within a global context to contribute to Kuala Lumpur’s image as a cultural hub, particularly with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The role of science and technology in education will also take the spotlight during today's session. S. Kesavan, the MP for Sungai Siput (PH-Sungai Siput), is scheduled to ask the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation about strategies to further engage the public in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning. This includes exploring events like National Science Week and the Malaysia Techlympics as tools for fostering greater participation in STEM disciplines across the nation.
Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, representing Gombak (PH-Gombak), is expected to raise significant concerns about the Ministry of Digital's approach to the National AI Roadmap. He will be questioning how the government plans to optimize artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, with particular attention to ensuring that civil servants are adequately trained in AI-related skills to support the country's digital transformation.
Education infrastructure will also be on the agenda, with Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, MP for Sungai Petani (PH-Sungai Petani), set to ask the Minister of Education about the government's plans to address the growing issue of abandoned teachers' quarters across Malaysia. His question will call for an update on the strategies in place to resolve these infrastructure concerns.
Following the question session, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the presentation and debate of the Auditor-General’s Report (LKAN) 2025 Series 1. This will be followed by the tabling of the Supplementary Supply (2024) Bill 2025 by the Minister of Finance for its second reading. - February 27, 2025
