THE Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Sarawak branch is calling on traders at FAMA-organised Ramadan bazaars to donate any surplus food to those in need.

State FAMA Director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir explained that the initiative aims to both reduce food waste and support the less fortunate.

“From past experiences, the Ramadan bazaars we organise have successfully achieved zero waste management, meaning no food was wasted,” she said.

To further this goal, Norsalawaty encouraged vendors to set up designated donation stations for the underprivileged. She also mentioned that state FAMA will organise various programmes to handle surplus food.

The state FAMA is hosting Ramadan bazaars at two locations this year: Medan Niaga Satok and Permai Sibu Farmers' Market. The goal is to achieve RM2.5 million in sales and attract an estimated 80,000 visitors.

The Medan Niaga Satok bazaar, with the theme ‘Mensia Marek’ (a long time ago), features 72 lots, each offering distinct and unique food selections with no overlap.

“This year, we are embracing a traditional theme, showcasing dishes such as sotong tutok and kuih bongkol. Visitors will also have the chance to purchase fresh produce from the market,” Norsalawaty added. – March 1, 2025
