DJs from Era FM's '3 Pagi Era' show have issued a public apology following a controversial video which mocked the Hindu traditional kavadi sacred ritual performed during Thaipusam in honour of Lord Murugan.
The video, which was later removed from the station's social media platforms, depicted the DJs mimicking the kavadi dance, chanting “Vel Vel” while laughing, which many found disrespectful to the Hindu community.
In a Instagram post, DJs Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Affendi Ahmad Aruani expressed their regret for the insensitive content and acknowledged the hurt caused, particularly to the Indian community.
“We never intended to offend anyone, and we deeply respect the beliefs and values of every individual. We will be more careful in the future,” the trio wrote.
“We are also always open to receiving comments and criticism to improve ourselves, especially from our loyal Era listeners. Once again, we sincerely apologise for the unintentional mistake we have made. Please forgive us.”
3 DJs off the air temporarily
In a new development, Astro Audio, in a statement, today said: “As a responsible broadcaster, it takes this matter seriously, and after careful consideration, we have decided to take the three individuals off-air until further notice while we review the situation internally.
The company deeply regrets the recent incident involving a video featuring announcers Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin and Radin which was shared on ERA’s social media platforms.
“We sincerely apologise for causing hurt and disappointment to those who are affected. Our announcers have acknowledged their mistake and have issued a public apology,” it said.
The company added that Astro Audio is committed to upholding the trust of our listeners and maintaining a respectful and inclusive media environment.
“We are taking steps to strengthen our content review processes to ensure that we continue to create programming that reflects the values and expectations of our audience. We are also cooperating closely with the authorities and regulators to ensure full compliance with all guidelines and requirements.”
The company appreciates the feedback from our listeners and stakeholders and will continue to listen, learn, and do better. Thank you for your continued support and understanding, it added.
The video quickly garnered widespread backlash, with many condemning it as offensive to Hindu traditions.
MIC Deputy President and Tapah MP Datuk M. Saravanan demanded a public apology from the station and called on the government to take action against those responsible. – March 4, 2025
