SHOPPERS at a bustling mall in Johor Baru were left shaken after a portion of the ceiling on the second floor unexpectedly collapsed yesterday evening, sending debris crashing onto nearby stores and kiosks.

The shocking incident was captured in a viral TikTok video by Rahim Razak, which showed extensive damage to the affected area, with iron girders and twisted metal protruding from the wreckage.

Large sections of the ceiling had caved in, leaving hanging metal structures dangerously close to the kiosks below. Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moment, describing a loud, thunderous crash followed by screams as panic set in and shoppers rushed to flee the area.

One witness recalled, "I was just a few steps away when I heard a loud cracking sound. The next thing I knew, the ceiling came crashing down! It was terrifying."

As of now, it remains unclear whether anyone was injured, and no official statement has been released by the mall’s management.

In response to the incident, mall security swiftly cordoned off the affected area to prevent further risks, ensuring that no additional damage could occur.

However, the lack of immediate comment from mall management has raised concerns among netizens, who are questioning the safety standards and maintenance practices at the mall. Many are demanding an investigation into how such a disaster could unfold.

Shoppers have expressed their worries on social media, urging authorities to look into the incident to ensure the safety of others and prevent future accidents at the mall. – March 10, 2025
