THE Democratic Action Party (DAP) will hold its Central Executive Committee (CEC) election tomorrow at 10am, with 70 candidates vying for 30 available seats.
The election will be conducted at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, as part of the party's 18th National Congress.
The event will kick off with a speech by DAP National Chairman Lim Guan Eng, followed by a policy address from DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook before the polling process begins.
According to DAP National Organising Secretary Steven Sim, a total of 4,203 delegates from 1,650 branches are eligible to cast their votes in the election. Among the prominent candidates running for the CEC seats are Loke, Guan Eng, Sim, Gobind Singh Deo, Ramkarpal Singh, Nga Kor Ming, Chow Kon Yeow, and Chong Chieng Jen.
A total of 15 female candidates are contesting for the nine seats reserved for women, including notable figures such as Hannah Yeoh, Teresa Kok, Teo Nie Ching, Yeo Bee Yin, Young Syefura Othman, Lim Hui Ying, Vivian Wong, Wong Shu Qi, and Alice Lau.
The elected members will represent DAP during the 2025-2028 term and will play a key role in determining the party’s top leadership, including the new Secretary-General.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as the Chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH), is expected to attend the congress.
Other prominent PH leaders, including Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) President Datuk Ewon Benedick, have also been invited.
As in previous years, an international audit firm will monitor the election process to ensure a clean, fair, and transparent democratic procedure.
The CEC, DAP's highest decision-making body, plays a crucial role in setting the party’s direction, formulating policies, and enforcing the party constitution.
The 30 elected members will have the authority to co-opt an additional 10 members. Following the election of CEC members, the party’s office bearers, including the Secretary-General, will be chosen.– March 15, 2024
